How we got there

Decimals may be rounded to eight places; rupee amounts to two.

    A little understanding

Let’s make the numbers make sense.

What does “per cent” actually mean?

Per cent means “out of 100”. So 15% is 15 out of every 100, or 0.15 as a decimal. To find 15% of 200, multiply 200 by 0.15. The answer is 30.

    Percentage of a number = (percentage ÷ 100) × number

The three modes answer different questions. “% of a number” finds a portion. “What %?” compares a part with a whole. “% change” compares a new value with the starting value.

How do I calculate percentage change?

Subtract the starting value from the new value, divide by the absolute starting value, then multiply by 100. From 80 to 100, the increase is 25%. A starting value of zero has no defined percentage change.

Can a percentage be greater than 100?

Yes. 150% of 200 is 300. Percentages above 100 describe more than the original whole.

Is 20% off followed by 20% on the same price?

No. Starting with ₹100, a 20% discount gives ₹80. Increasing ₹80 by 20% gives ₹96. The second percentage uses a different starting amount.
