Let’s make the numbers make sense.
Make the pieces the same size
A denominator tells you how many equal pieces make up a whole. Before adding 1/2 and 1/4, write 1/2 as 2/4. Now both fractions count quarters: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4.
a/b + c/d = (a × d + c × b) / (b × d)
Multiplication works differently: multiply the numerators, then the denominators. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction. Results are reduced by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor.
Why can’t a denominator be zero?
A fraction means division. Division by zero has no defined finite answer, so both denominators must be nonzero.
Can I enter negative fractions?
Yes. Put a minus sign in the numerator or denominator. The answer keeps any minus sign in the numerator and uses a positive denominator.
What is a simplified fraction?
A fraction is simplified when the numerator and denominator have no common factor greater than 1. For example, 6/8 simplifies to 3/4.
